The Mogao Caves was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1987.
The Mogao Caves are located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, at the western end of the Hexi Corridor. Their excavation began during the Sixteen Kingdoms period and continued through the Yuan Dynasty, spanning approximately 1000 years. There are currently 735 caves, housing over 45, 000 square meters of murals, more than 2400 painted sculptures, and 5 wooden cave eaves of the Tang and Song dynasties. It is a profound and comprehensive art sanctuary consisting of architecture, painting, and sculpture, and it is the world's largest and best-preserved Buddhist art site.
The Mogao Caves are not only a brilliant art treasure of ancient Chinese civilization but also an important testament to the dialogue and exchange between different civilizations that once took place along the ancient Silk Road. It attracts the attention of numerous art and history enthusiasts.
