On August 26, a massive volume of rock and ice, including part of a glacier, suddenly collapsed in the Langtang Lirung mountain region near the Nepal–China border. The resulting rock-and-ice avalanche rapidly transformed into a massive debris flow, rushing down through the Lhende river system. Within minutes, it devastated the Gyirong port area on the Chinese side before crossing into Nepal through Rasuwagadhi and surging into the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli river system, leaving a trail of extraordinary destruction.
Preliminary calculations by scientists suggest that the avalanche travelled roughly 22 kilometres before reaching the Gyirong port area. More alarming still, it took only about six to seven minutes from the initial collapse in the upper mountain to reach the border area. The debris flow reportedly swept across around 0.7 square kilometres and destroyed at least 27 buildings and structures around Gyirong port.
In that sense, this was a kind of Himalayan tsunami.It paid no attention to political geography. The disaster was another reminder that nature operates according to its own rules. As of the morning of August 31, Nepal’s official figures put the death toll at 903, with 4,247 people still missing. China, too, has suffered substantial losses.
The disaster has demonstrated once again how deeply interconnected neighbouring countries are from a natural and geographical perspective. It is therefore not enough to draw lessons only about rescue and reconstruction. Nepal and China now need to institutionalise cooperation on how to reduce the damage from similar disasters in the future.

To understand the scale of the disaster, it is important first to understand the geography in which it occurred.
The Rasuwagadhi–Gyirong border crossing lies roughly 120 to 145 kilometres by road from Kathmandu, depending on the route used. The distance itself is not particularly great, but travelling there has long been difficult because Nepal’s road infrastructure remains fragile. Floods, landslides and erosion repeatedly disrupt the highway. In this disaster alone, Nepal’s Department of Roads says several sections of the roughly 42-kilometre stretch between Betravati and Rasuwagadhi were washed away.
Conditions are different across the border. Gyirong lies in a high-altitude and geographically remote part of western Xizang, but road, communications and other infrastructure on the Chinese side are considerably more developed.
Gyirong also has a long historical legacy.
It did not become a gateway between Nepal and China only in modern times. As early as the seventh century, an ancient route connecting Xizang and Nepal ran from Lhasa through the Gyirong valley, crossed the Himalayas and descended through Nuwakot and the Trishuli valley towards Kathmandu. Historical scholarship refers to this as the Ancient Tubo–Nepal Road. It was an old Himalayan corridor through which trade, religion, culture and people moved for centuries.
Its significance has grown rather than diminished in modern times.
Gyirong–Rasuwagadhi is now one of the most important land crossings for trade between China and Nepal. Chinese customs figures show that in 2024, imports and exports through Gyirong port were worth around 4.25 billion yuan—close to 30 percent of total Nepal–China trade at the time. China has also described Gyirong as an important gateway towards South Asia.
There are other road-connected border points between the two countries, including Zhangmu–Tatopani to the east and Korala further west. But because of its proximity to Kathmandu, its growing share of bilateral trade and its potential role in future transport connectivity, Gyirong occupies a distinct strategic position.
There is also a long-term plan to extend railway connectivity into this corridor. China’s railway network has already reached Shigatse, and Nepal and China have formally taken forward a feasibility study for a Gyirong–Kathmandu railway. The region has therefore increasingly been viewed as a potential backbone of north–south connectivity.
The route is also important for religious tourism. Nepali, Indian and other foreign pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar have increasingly used the Gyirong crossing. That helps explain why the number of foreign nationals among those missing on the Chinese side is also significant.
On the Nepali side, meanwhile, the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor has developed into an important centre for hydropower generation. More than a dozen large and small projects are either operational or under construction along the river basin. At least 11 hydropower projects have been damaged by the latest flood. Many of these projects employed not only Nepali workers, but also Chinese, Indian, South Korean and other foreign technicians and labourers.
The most difficult rescue challenge has emerged inside the hydropower tunnels.
According to the latest figures, 933 people associated with hydropower project areas are listed as missing. That does not mean all of them are trapped inside tunnels, but fears that large numbers of workers may be stranded underground have made the rescue operation extraordinarily difficult.

China’s response to the disaster on its side of the border is also worth noting.
On August 26, the day the disaster struck, President Xi Jinping issued instructions calling for maximum efforts to locate the missing, evacuate people from areas at risk, provide immediate treatment to the injured, strengthen monitoring and early-warning systems, and guard against secondary disasters.
The following day, August 27, Premier Li Qiang travelled to Gyirong in person. He inspected affected areas, met rescue workers and displaced residents, and issued instructions from the field. Vice-Premier Zhang Guoqing also travelled to the disaster zone with a team of officials.
On August 28, a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee was held under President Xi’s chairmanship. The meeting began with a moment of silence for those killed in the disaster. It then discussed the search for missing Chinese and foreign nationals, monitoring of potential new glacial-lake and geological risks, assistance to affected communities, and emergency support for Nepal.
China subsequently mounted a large-scale rescue operation. The speed of that mobilisation has also drawn attention in Nepal.
While carrying out rescue efforts on its own territory, Beijing also stepped up assistance to Nepal. President Xi sent a message to President Ramchandra Paudel, expressing sympathy and pledging active Chinese support for Nepal’s rescue operation and assistance within China’s capacity.
On August 29, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal held a telephone conversation. Wang described the disaster as one of the most serious cross-border natural disasters faced by Nepal and China in recent years. Their discussions covered rescue and relief, the search for missing persons, hydrological information-sharing and future cooperation on early warning.
On the Nepali side, the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, government agencies, local communities and civilian volunteers have been at the forefront of the response. Thousands of people have been moved to safety. Around 21,000 security personnel have been mobilised. Given the difficult terrain, damaged roads, adverse weather and continuing risk of further flooding, their work deserves recognition.
But the situation changed once rescue operations had to move deep inside hydropower tunnels.
Nepal simply did not have sufficient specialised capacity for such operations.
Specialised Chinese tunnel-rescue experts were therefore brought in. An initial technical team crossed into Nepal by helicopter and began working alongside the Nepal Army. At sites including Upper Trishuli 3B in Nuwakot, they assessed tunnel conditions and the technical possibilities for rescue. At the Upper Trishuli-1 area, Chinese specialists reportedly searched roughly three kilometres inside the tunnel.
On August 30, China sent four additional tunnel-rescue experts and specialised equipment to Kathmandu aboard two Y-20 military transport aircraft. The same aircraft brought 50 tonnes of emergency relief supplies, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, dry food and first-aid materials.
China has also provided the Government of Nepal with US$2 million in emergency cash assistance. The Red Cross Society of China contributed another US$200,000 to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
This is not the first time Nepal has received this kind of Chinese assistance.
After the 2015 earthquake, a 62-member China International Search and Rescue Team arrived in Kathmandu the following day. The team rescued two people alive from collapsed buildings. One of them had remained trapped under the rubble for more than 50 hours. Chinese medical and rescue personnel also treated 2,729 injured people.
China has significant experience, manpower and equipment for responding to major landslides, tunnel accidents, earthquakes and high-altitude disasters. Nepal is now drawing on that expertise again.

There is another reason why the Gyirong–Rasuwagadhi disaster deserves much closer attention: this is the second consecutive year that the same border region has suffered a major flood.
On July 8, 2025, a flash flood in the Lhende River washed away the Friendship Bridge linking Nepal and China. Trade and passenger movement remained disrupted for almost six months. China subsequently built a 91-metre temporary steel Bailey bridge, allowing the border crossing to reopen on January 1, 2026.
Less than eight months later, a far larger disaster struck the same region. This time, the Gyirong port area, Rasuwagadhi and much of the connected Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor have suffered unprecedented damage.
The question now is whether this is merely coincidence—or a warning of a larger transformation under way in the Himalayan environment.
It would be premature to attribute one particular disaster directly and conclusively to climate change. But scientists have long warned that rising temperatures, accelerated glacier melt, weakening permafrost and growing instability in high-altitude rock formations can increase the risk of ice-rock avalanches and other cascading hazards.
This is not an issue for Nepal and China alone.
The Hindu Kush–Himalayan region contains one of the largest stores of snow and ice outside the polar regions. River systems originating here sustain hundreds of millions of people across South and Central Asia. Changes in this mountain system do not remain confined to the high Himalayas; their consequences travel hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres downstream.
Nepal and China therefore need long-term cooperation in at least three areas.
First, joint scientific research on the Himalayan region
We have a political boundary between us, but in ecological and geographical terms we are inseparably connected.
One slope of a mountain may lie in Nepal and the other in China. A glacier may be inside Nepal, while the flood or avalanche it produces may strike China. A glacial lake in China can rupture and send a flood into Nepal.
Until now, research on glaciers, glacial lakes, permafrost, rock instability and river systems has largely been carried out separately. The two countries now need a permanent joint research mechanism linking scientists, universities, hydrological and meteorological agencies, and disaster-management institutions.
Such a mechanism would allow both countries to build a common understanding of risks and use the same scientific evidence when shaping policies and infrastructure plans.
Second, real-time information-sharing and an automatic early-warning system
This may be the most important lesson from the latest disaster.
The avalanche took only six or seven minutes to travel from the upper mountain to the Gyirong port area. In such a situation, there is simply no time to wait for information to travel through Kathmandu and Beijing via conventional diplomatic channels.
The system must therefore operate automatically.
Both countries should install monitoring stations capable of measuring glacier movement, river flow, rainfall, glacial-lake levels, seismic signals and slope movement. The resulting data should be visible to relevant agencies on both sides in real time. Once a predetermined risk threshold is crossed, alerts should automatically reach local administrations, security agencies and communities on both sides of the border.
There should also be a dedicated disaster hotline at the border level, with designated focal points in Rasuwagadhi and Gyirong.
Third, a joint rescue protocol and advance preparedness
Nepal and China should agree in advance on a cross-border disaster-response protocol.
It should specify what kind of team is deployed for what type of emergency, which border point or air route should be used, how immigration and customs clearance for personnel and equipment will be expedited, how equipment will enter the country, and which agency will command or coordinate operations once foreign specialists arrive.
The two countries could also conduct periodic joint exercises involving their military, police, disaster-management agencies and medical teams in the border region.
The point is simple: they should not be learning how to work with one another after a disaster has already happened. They should understand each other’s systems before the next emergency arrives.

This disaster has added a new dimension to the Nepal–China relationship.
We often speak about building roads between the two countries. We speak of railways, expanding trade and increasing tourism. All of that matters.
But if the Himalayas themselves are becoming increasingly unstable, connectivity cannot mean roads and railways alone. A shared system for making that connectivity safe must also become part of the idea of connectivity.
The warning from the Himalayas this time is unmistakable: disasters do not recognise borders.
Our preparedness, therefore, cannot stop at the border either. This is a shared challenge. Nepal and China will have to confront it together.
