Switzerland is participating in the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) for the first time, presenting the programme Switzerland on Paper at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing.
Under the theme that books are not only read, but also designed, illustrated, and imagined, Switzerland showcases the diversity of its contemporary book culture through exhibitions, talks, workshops, and interactive activities.

A central highlight is the Swiss Art Book Fair, featuring award-winning titles from The Most Beautiful Swiss Books, one of Switzerland’s most prestigious book design awards. The exhibition also includes 75 Years in 75 Objects, published to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and China. Award-winning Swiss designer Martin Stoecklin engages with visitors through guided tours, workshops, and discussions on Swiss book culture and design.
The literary programme is dedicated to Hermann Hesse, whose works continue to enjoy a wide readership in China. Marking the 80th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in Literature, the Embassy of Switzerland in China, in collaboration with the International Hermann Hesse Society of Basel, presents Hesse’s works and legacy, highlighting the enduring relevance of one of Switzerland’s most influential literary voices.
Swiss children’s literature is represented by illustrator and author Tito Moccia, who participates in readings and creative workshops. The programme also highlights the Swiss origins of the beloved character Pingu, who is widely known in China but less often associated with Switzerland.
In addition, the Visual Storytelling about Switzerland section presents an illustrated publication created in collaboration between Switzerland Tourism and Chinese illustrator Ma Yuqing, demonstrating how contemporary publishing can connect cultures through visual narratives.

At the opening ceremony, Counsellor Felix Schwendimann, Head of Culture and Media at the Embassy of Switzerland in China, highlighted the role of books in fostering dialogue across cultures and generations.
“In Switzerland, books are more than carriers of stories and knowledge – they are expressions of creativity, design and cultural exchange. We are proud to share this diversity at the Beijing International Book Fair and to build new bridges between Swiss and Chinese readers, creators and publishers.”
An interactive Swiss Discovery Stamp Game invites visitors to explore the different Swiss exhibition areas and engage with Swiss culture in a playful way.
The Switzerland on Paper programme runs until 21 June 2026 and is open to the public.
