The JinShang International Fashion & Culture Gala was held recently in Beijing, marking the debut of the “World Weave” concept as a platform for cultural exchange through fashion. More than 30 foreign diplomats, international designers, global models, and cross-disciplinary thought leaders gathered for an evening that combined runway presentations with cultural dialogue, positioning design as a shared language across regions.
H.E. Mr. Dario Mihelin, Ambassador of Croatia to China, appeared in national costume and traditional jewelry, describing attire as “the silent epic of a nation.” Cultural expressions from Pakistan, Moldova, the Dominican Republic, and Turkey followed, each expressed through distinctive textile traditions and craftsmanship. Professor Eyüp Saritaş, Director of the Beijing Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Center, further highlighted the historical intersections between Europe and Asia through garments rich in movement and detail.
In her address, JinShang founder Lilian Tian outlined a philosophy centered on timelessness and creative freedom. “Ultimately, the essence of fashion is to lead people to greater freedom,” she said. Reflecting on her personal journey, she added, “When I was young, a single beautiful dress brought me complete satisfaction. In pursuit of beauty, I designed the JinShang spaces—and those spaces became my new clothes.” She also noted, “The most beautiful thing in nature is the sky above us; our only limitation is the sky.” Her remarks framed JinShang as both a physical environment and an extension of individual expression.
A key segment of the evening, “Lilian’s Closet,” presented archival pieces from Tian’s personal collection spanning two decades, reflecting on memory, craftsmanship, and enduring style. In parallel, the “Unscripted Walk” brought philosopher Professor Chen Jiaying, Mr. Vaughn Barber, Chairman of the Australian Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Michael Song, Topline Chairman, onto the runway, extending the boundaries of conventional fashion presentation. “Beauty imbued with confidence is perhaps exceptional beauty; in turn, the intellectual also yearns for an expression of beauty,” Chen said, adding that the significance of fashion lies in whether individuals can choose their own style rather than be regulated by trends. Michael Song described the initiative as encompassing “a center of aesthetic education, a pioneering journey of art, and a manifesto for the aesthetics of living,” while Vaughn Barber remarked, “Fashion is beauty and happiness,” and highlighted JinShang as a place for community gathering.
The runway continued with a range of international designers. Julia Ndong Asue presented her collection “Beautiful Mistake,” exploring the poetic dimension of imperfection. Colombian designer Silvana, through her brand Hanging Sense, introduced elements of Latin American warmth and vibrancy, while Xafer Wear brought silhouettes shaped by African aesthetics. The Rainbow Ballet Art Troupe incorporated traditional Chinese attire, including Hanfu and cheongsam, alongside a performance of Swan Lake. Chinese-American designer Justin Kwan closed the showcase with his brand Principle M, presenting a synthesis of Eastern sensibilities and Western tailoring.
A cultural forum moderated by Dr. Raphael Moffett of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, extended the conversation beyond the runway. Justin Kwan noted, “The charm of bespoke lies precisely in every ordinary person. Each piece holds its own unique beauty.” Italian publisher Paolo Cuciniello said, “If I could design a garment for one person, it would be my mother—she is the door through which we enter this world.” Artist Megan added, “Wearing them is not just about beauty; it’s about history.” Concluding the discussion, the moderator emphasized, “Be yourself. Wear what you want to wear. When you are authentic with yourself, beautiful things will follow.”
Throughout the evening, attention to detail—from intricate embroidery to the movement of fabric and handcrafted accessories—underscored the artistry behind each design, capturing fleeting yet expressive moments on the runway.
As the runway lights dimmed, the “World Weave” International Fashion & Culture Gala at JinShang·YUAN in Beijing came to a close. More than a showcase of fashion, the event served as an exploration of cultural interweaving and intellectual resonance. JinShang Group stated that it will continue to use design, space, and culture as mediums to foster dialogue and integration among different civilizations, positioning fashion as a universal language that connects people across cultures.
